Carded

I went to see Kill Bill, vol. 2 last night. It was as good as the first and, in deference to some persons who haven't seen it yet and have asked my silence, that's all I'm going to say.

Before the movie were some trailers. Two of them were for Troy and King Arthur, both of which I'm sold on, even if I really can't picture Brad Pitt as Achilles.

More important than those two trailers was the trailer for Hero. Made in 2002, Hero's the most elaborate, biggest budget movie ever made in China. I first saw it a year ago, on an import DVD I borrowed from a friend at work, and went out to get my own bootlegged copy from some website or another. I'm not normally a bootleg fan, but Hero was that good. In a lot of ways it's helped to inspire what I'm doing with the Earth and Heaven series, though I expect the influences won't really show in Fire and Jade. I'm very excited that I'll be able to see Hero on the big screen.

As exciting as the trailers were, though, I had a strange encounter when I was buying my ticket. I approached the ticket counter and asked for a ticket to see Kill Bill.

"Can I see your ID please?" the guy behind the counter said.

"What?" I wasn't sure I'd heard him right; I couldn't have heard him right.

"Can I see your ID please?"

"You're kidding, right?" I reached into my back pocket and pulled out the little wallet where I keep my driver's licence and rail pass. As I opened it to get my licence, a bit of metal flashed; my tiny PBA badge.

The said said, "oh, I'm sorry, I didn't see the badge. Enjoy the movie, sir."

Then he handed me my ticket.

I don't believe this guy thought the PBA thing was an actual police badge. I believe even less that I got carded to see a movie.

Marc:

That's entirely too entertaining. I've got to get me a "be nice to cops" badge too.

Next time, try that trick to get faster service at the popcorn counter.

gus:

I plan to see kill bill 2 when it arrives as well.

I enjoyed the first one and its many references to old action movies.

and well its an R rated movie right? the guy at the counter is suposed to ask for some i.d.

as for the hero movie i saw a preview in the home of a friend all i have to say is wow.

I like it and its not the only oriental movie that looks very interesting I have to say.

Jason:

You're right, Gus, it is rated R and in theory they should card. But at the same time, I am clearly over 17 years old, which is all you need to be to see an R movie. I mean, I'm not long shy of a decade older than the minimum age you need to be to see this movie.

Hero is flat out stunning and there's just no other way around it.

Oh, and incidentally, Marc, the badge is useful for more than just getting ticket-counter cashiers to let me by. It also got me out of a speeding ticket Saturday night, thank God. Or thank the tight fraternalism of the New Jersey Police. Whichever.

Erik (the roommate):

1) You guys saw Kill Bill 2. And with me stuck in the god forsaken no man's land of Las Vegas with nothing to do. You bastard. ^_-

2) Point of note: Said import Hero DVD cost me the use of my DVD-ROM drive for anything other than region 3 and 0 discs, owing to poor documentation and firmware programming. Such is the cost of massive Wu-Zha asskickingness. Although to be fair, in hindsight I was happy to pay it.

Jason:

1) You saw Return of the King while I was in Russia. Bite me. ^_^

2) I was happy for you to pay it, too. ^_^ And now I went and bought Azumi and The Killer, too. There's a damned bootleg kiosk in the mall! In the mall!
