It's About Time

Over the past few years I've become very good at managing time zones. I've had friends or colleagues in no fewer than eleven of them, after all, and had to manage a bizarre schedule of phone calls, emails and chats. In that time I got used to a few things. I knew, for example, that Jon, Zach, Amanda and Gabe were always an hour or two or three behind me, which meant that when I was awake late at night and bored, I'd have someone to talk to. I knew, likewise, that Lena was eight hours ahead and getting into her afternoon stretch as I was just getting into work. This meant that I'd usually have an email from her waiting for me in the morning, but that we were pretty much a miss at phone calls and chats unless one of the two of us was keeping an odd schedule. I knew I'd start my work day by answering emails that had come in for me while I slept and that most of my Visitations would update in the afternoon.

But now things are a bit different. By the time I wake up, most of my friends have already been at work for an hour. When I'm winding down at nine and ready to make some calls, most of my friends are on their way to sleep. It's going to take a little getting used to.

Lena, as always, is the big exception. She's now eleven hours ahead of me. So, whatever time it is here, I can flip day to night and subtract an hour to get her time. Which means that she's almost winding down her night as I'm waking up and vice versa. That strange situation will make the chat or phone conversations much easier, which is cool.

Now if only she weren't missing...

Missing? That doesn't sound too good.

Btw...did you find a place in Seattle yet?

Jason:

Well, she's not really "missing," just I haven't heard from her lately. I actually have a pretty good idea of where she is and why she's not writing. I'm just being melodramatic.

And yeah, I found a place to live. I move in today-ish, though my stuff won't be here for a while yet. I get to sleep in a sleeping bag until then. Yay!

Marc:

Look on the bright side, I'm frequently looking for someone to chat with between 10:30-midnight. Even later on some nights.

And now you're conveniently 3 hours behind me, you Left Coast Freak. :)

Did your cell number change? If so, please let me know what the new one is.

Jason:

Nope, the cell number's still the same, and probably will be for as long as I'm out here. It works just fine and doesn't cost anything extra, so why not?

I'll get a local land-line, though. Again, why not?

Marc:

A raw desire to save roughly 20 bucks a month?

gus:

well gmt -6 here not sure how that translate to your time zone :)

Jason:

You're in the same boat as Zach and Jon, Gus - now two hours behind me.

Marc - local land-line service is $13 a month, and will be worth the price in terms of 800# and food-delivery phone calls. Plus the sound clarity for those who call me on it.

gus:

well one of the good things at my work then is that i spend from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm here so i guess thats plenty of time for you to get in touch :)

Meg:

$13 a month?! Even in Illinois, where everything is cheaper, the privilege of having a telephone in your home is $35. Here near DC, it's closer to $55 a month. No long distance. No extra services. Just to be have the ability to answer a telephone. I'm amazed at the thought of $13/mo.

gus:

he he he im paying usually each month around 150$

but we also have the internet charged to the phone bill

Jason:

Nope, my cable's integrated with my internet, and costs something like $70 a month. I regard that as theft, but it's apparently pretty reasonable.

The phone... well, I think that's just some strange miracle.

Ben of the Azure Sea:

CENTRAL TIME ZONE RULES!

Cen-TRAL! Cen-TRAL! Cen-TRAL! Cen-TRAL!

C-E-N-T-R-A-L! Five-o-CLOCK!
