Now With 1000% More Stuff

The moving men brought my property to me this morning. Everything was nicely in order, except for my desk, which came to me divided into three separate pieces. For reference, my desk is not meant to be compactable. So I still have no desk, which means it's still a pain in the ass to get work done.

On the plus side, though, I have a bed, which will make for comfortable sleeping. As opposed to the sleeping bag on the floor.

I also have my CDs. They were the first thing I looked for, of course. I sliced through a dozen boxes to find them. It's incredible how just a few bars of music can change your perspective. Well, maybe not change your perspective per se (since I actually have the same perspective on things now that I did yesterday), but at least lighten your load a little. I popped in a CD (Dar Williams, of course) and my troubles just seemed lighter. Not gone, just a little easier to cope with.

Along with my other things, though, was a book that I needed to write today's Fable, so a slight delay came in there. I still got it up on Wednesday, though, so it's all good. Except for the part where I'm not thrilled with how it came out. I think I rushed through it too quickly. With the power of the internet, I may go back and edit it later. Won't much help the people who've read it already, but anyone reading it in the future will get something better out of it. And I'll be more satisfied with it, which counts for a lot.

Meg:

Yayyyyy for stuff!

Brian:

The day always seems to get a little better with some Dar. All you need is some hot chocolate and it completes the scene.

gus:

ineteresting what books do you usually consult when writing??

Jason:

Hot chocolate would be good, though I'll wait for snow (if it ever comes) and some actually cold weather to get really tricked out with that shit. Meanwhile I'll content myself with orange juice.

Gus - depends on the project, really. For Fire and Jade I read a lot of Chinese history and go back to it whenever I get stuck. For Wolf's Rain I read a lot of Peter S. Beagle before I sat down to write, since the spirit (if not the style) of his writing was something I wanted to capture. For most of the short-stories I have coming up (the next things I'll be working on), I won't be referencing anything.

For the Fables, I read Aesop's Fables and Asian Zodiac stories before I got started writing and looked into a book on Transhumanism that had a chapter on light before I wrote the Tiger story, for obvious reasons.

So, mostly, I try to read something that will inform whatever I'm about to write.

Erik (not the rommate):

You're right about the Tiger story - it needs work. I didn't get the point of the light metaphors as you switched between source and properties of light in your descriptions. I don't know what the "gut punch" of the story is. Also, unlike the others, there is no context for this one. Sheep was at the loom now she's being held hostage by Tiger in an unknown location? It just seems... incomplete.

But stuff is good.

Jason:

Well, the stories (especially at this point) are not necessarily a continuing narrative. You can presume that Pig was on her way to the Diner when she bumped into Snake, you can presume Horse left Pig and went straight to Rat. Neither of these things are necessarily true. I mean, none of the stories so far really have an external context.

You're right, though, that I get a little bogged down with/distracted by the light and that makes the story a bit incomplete. It's less character-driven than the others, is maybe a better way to say it. I will think on this and possibly fix it later.

Erik (not the roommate):

You better. As a longtime viewer, I feel you owe me. :)

Worst...episode...ever.

Jason:

There. Done. And much better for it (I think). Not the best piece I've ever written, but that's ok. It does what I wanted it to.
