Why is it that whenever I go somewhere I invariably find myself in an argument about religion? And it doesn't even matter with who. I get into arguments equally easily with Atheists, Christians, Wiccans, Muslims, Jews, Hindus and Buddhists. It's not like I go looking to get into a fight. I mean, shit, I barely have any religious beliefs of my own, and they very rarely come to the exclusion of others.
But there I was last night, having just watched Rashomon with some local friends and their film and spirituality discussion group (which I'm honestly convinced is just a fancy way of saying "some friends of theirs," but that's cool). The discussion got a little tangential and there I am making the same points about God's portrayal in the Old Testament that I've made here before.
To be fair it was a fairly friendly argument. Far from the knock-down, drag-out theological slug-fests I've had with other folks. But it was a source of amazement to me, anyway.

Rashomon? Religion? I guess I could see it, though I never would have gotten one from the other. But I suppose whether or not you think there is an objective truth is a spiritual matter... And it does have an oddly mushed on message of hope at the end.

Oh...and you can HARDLY blame your horribly luck for this one. It was a spirituality discussion group. Umm...hello? Speaking of which, what is it with me and food? Whenever I go into a restaurant I can't seem to help getting into a discussion of what kind of food I want to order!

Don't look at me, man. I didn't pick the movie. (Not that I'm complaining, mind; I love Rashomon.) I think there is a certain moralistic subtext, swimming like a shark just beneath the choppy surface of the question of truth, it's predatory fin of moral intent ever visible as it circle's the viewer's dinghy of objective reality.
Or something.
And, ok, point on the discussion group. But I hardly expected to be discussing the Old Testament after watching a Japanese film set in fuedal Japan, you know?

Not so odd. Every time I spend time with Beckah, Dave, or Jill we divert at least a few minutes to Godly matters, for good or ill. And I'm not usually the one who brings it up.
However, I admit to being, like Jason, an aggravating factor. Like a forensics enzyme.
