Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi

Has anyone else seen the Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi show yet? The show based on the Japanese musical duo of similar name? (In Japan they're simply called Puffy.) Am I the only one who thinks it's delightfully psychedelic? Does it remind anyone else of various shorts from the 70's? Is it just me, or are the girls voiced by the same actresses who do Raven and Starfire on Teen Titans?

Is anyone else as impressed as I am that their music sometimes transcends typical JPop to become actually serious rock?

Oh, and am I the only one who thinks that Ami and Yumi are totally cute? When they're not dressed in retro-80's gear, that is?

Erik:

Grey DeLisle is Yumi

Janice Kawaye is Ami

Hynden Walch is Starfire and

Tara Strong is Raven, although she is probably better known as Powerpuff Girl Bubbles and Supes/Bats era Barbara Gordon

IMDB, man - best resource ever. How else would you find out that half the talent on Cartoon Network these days did stints on Captain Planet (Robin = Ma-Ti, Ami = Gi)?

P.S. Upon further exploration, we find that Captain Planet is possibly the most star-studded crappy action cartoon ever made. They got guest stars like Phyllis Diller, Tim Curry, Martin Sheen, Danny Glover - it goes on forever! Did EVERY damn Hollywood star buy in to that wussy eviro-friendly crap? I'm all for environmentalism, but that doesn't excuse clogging up my Saturday morning with bad cel art and pandering scripts. As a kid, my time is very valuable!

Ben of the Azure Sea:

Grey DeLisle is a country singer, and is also the voice of the wonderfully ultra-cynical Mandy on Billy & Mandy and of Lor on The Weekenders, a truly awesome show despite being from Disney.

Janice Kawaye is the voice of Jenny (XJ-9) on My Life as a Teenage Robot. She fights EVIL RUSSIAN COMMUNIST MICE.

Both are cast perfectly, in my opinion. The show is wonderfully psychedelic and can be enjoyed by all. Unlike Captain Planet. That piece of crap ruined the block of time from 7:30 to 8 between Bionic Six and the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, which is unforgivable.

Ami and Yumi are indeed cute; I especially like the way Ami's hair pompoms seem to float above her head. This show is a wonderful alternative to sHRoOmS.

Jason:

Hhm. Should've looked them up myself, I guess. I knew I recognized the voices, though. Billy & Mandy I've seen tons of times (Mandy's cool, but I'm not a fan of the show) and I've seen Teenage Robot a few times and pretty well enjoyed it.

Uhm... Also, I should perhaps point out that when I was referring to the cuteness of Ami and Yumi I meant that the actual Ami and Yumi are actually cute. As in "Japanese rock stars Ami and Yumi are two attractive young women whom I would certainly engage in conversation if I encountered in a social setting or (if you'll forgive the vulgarity) not push out of bed." I didn't so much mean "aww, those little animated kiddies are just adorable!" (Although I suppose the later's as true as the former.)

They's sexy, to be blunt.

Erik:

It's hard to believe that they're pop stars. In the few ad spots they've been in they seem kinda stiff and cardboard. But that might be just the direction at the PR department.

Then again, idol marketing is all about style over substance.

Oooo, I just noticed that Mr. Kaz is played by Keone Young, also known as Storm Shadow

Da, ve are beink evil communist micen. Ve are wantink your cheezes.

...ahem.

I'm reminded of "Gem" for some reason...or possibly "Josey and the Pussy Cats"...only, y'know, without the entire cast of "Scooby Doo" guest starring.

At least...that's what I think of when I think of pop-music based cartoon shows.

And, as for star studded cartoon show casts, lets not forget "Gargoyles", which managed to have half the actors from several different seirses of Star Trek on it.

Jason:

To be fair to Ami and Yumi, neither one of them speaks fluent English. Or even marginally fluent English, as I understand it. It's hard to be anything less than stiff and cardboard when you can't necessarily communicate with the people giving you direction and you're sounding out your dialogue as you read it off a prompter with no clue what you're actually saying.

I haven't seen any interviews with them in Japanese or anything like that, but they seem plenty... uhm... animated... in the concert clips of theirs I've seen.

The world of voice-acting, much like the world of Disney tv, is an insanely incestuous thing. But now I want to see more of Teenage Robot, because evil communist mice do sound like a lot of fun.

Ben of the Azure Sea:

Oh. Well, the real Ami and Yumi are indeed hot, in that 'cardboard cutout idol star' sort of way.

I miss Invader Zim.

"TIME FOR SOME PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED DOOM!"

Jason:

"Cardboard cutout?" I guess. Not that I much think of other idols hot, so I dunno.

And yes! Invader Zim! I wish to god they'd put the series in a boxed set!
