In the shower this morning it occurred to me that the water here in Seattle doesn't seem as wet as the water in New Jersey. I've got a harder time rinsing shampoo and conditioner out of my hair here than I do in the East Coast.
Of course as I thought about that I also thought about the way my mail, which had been outside for two weeks with only the mailbox for protection while I was away, was soaked when I picked it up. So maybe it's just the water coming out of the shower. I can't remember if I've had similar reaction to any of the other showers I've used in the area.
Maybe I should just shower in the rain from now on.

New Jersey water is very hard - lots of calcium and magnesium - which makes it hard to get a good lather our of soap and fairly easy to wash away (minus the awful mineral residue). If your water is "softer" then you'll notice detergents clinging to surfaces much more readily.
Or so it has been explained to me. My folks have a water softener and they use a third less laundry detergent, less they end up with a classic domestic sitcom sight gag.

Interesting, Erik. I haven't noticed an appreciable difference in my clothing after washing, but you might be right about the hard vs. soft water issue. Years ago, when Ann first came to Jersey, she complained that the water there irritated her skin.
Not having experienced it myself (nor having as sensitive skin as she had) I didn't quite get it. I did, however, later notice a difference between the water in Jersey and the water in Russia. Aside from the non-drinkability thereof, Russian water tends to irritate my scalp.

Umm, I don't know how to tell you this, Jason. But... That was vodka.
