Overheard

Some girl on campus today: "Sure, he's my friend and all, but I wouldn't go out of my way to help him."

Funny but, to me, being willing to go out of your way to help someone is pretty much one of the key definitions of what it means to be a friend. Being willing to inconvenience yourself; being able to put aside, for however short a time, your wants and needs in favor of theirs; being ready, in fact glad, to sacrifice on their behalf.

Everyone's welcome to their own opinion on this, but... Well, it's not so much my style.

gus:

That sounds so the opposite of what i feel.

all i have to say is that i disagree completly with that mindset.

Jason:

Which mindset, Gus? Mine, or that of the girl I overheard?

Brian:

Hmmm...doesn't exactly sound like she's quite the good friend. Maybe she needs to go to "What's a friend 101."

gus:

The girl you overheard

it sounded more like instead of a friend she was refering to it was a stranger she disliked...

Jason:

Point, Gus. Like many things in life, there's a Simpsons quote that's relevant here:

"I'm a well-wisher, in that I don't wish you any specific harm."

Jon:

Some people just make me sick.

Jason:

Most people make me sick. I have a general hatred for the swarming mass of humanity.

Or at least I get a kick out of saying I do.

The girl doesn't make me sick though - that really wouldn't be fair. She just confuses me.

(To be fair, I'm sure I've said some pretty bone-headed things at times myself, so...)

Bekah:

Isn't that the definition of "true neutral"?

Jason:

Like being from the planet of neutrality! "If I die, tell my wife 'hello.'"
