I Have Something To Say

Given... well, everything... it was only a matter of time until we got to see a Highlander Anime. You can find the trailer here on left of page.

Really. It's better to burn out than to fade away, you know...

Erik:

Um, why are there robots?

Bard:

errr...what does this have to do with Highlander? There's some robots, and a guy doing Matrix-dodging of bullets, and weird flying people with blade arms.

This has about as much to do with Highlander as Spirits Within had to do with Final Fantasy.

Ben:

The Highlander Theme ("There Can Be Only One") is all the rage in Japan right now. "Zatch Bell" is a freaky acid trip about freaky mutant little people called "Momodos" who were sent to Earth to find human partners who can make them cast spells to destroy each other until there is only one left. "Rozen Maiden" is a super-freaky shoujo about talking dolls who must battle it out for the right to become the vessel for the soul of the dead dollmaker's daughter.

Super-FREAKY--YOW!!

Jason:

Historically speaking, Queen is one of Japan's most popular bands. I can't speak for the past five or ten years or so, though.

What this freaky-ass looking trailer has anything to do with Highlander I'm really not sure. Though as I understand it the story is of one Colin McCloud, centuries in the future.

As if Highlander weren't screwed up enough...

Bekah:

"I am too animated!"

Bard:

There WAS an animated Highlander series at one point, set in a far off distant, post-apocalyptic future. Apparently in order to save the world all the immortals (who were never CALLED immortals in the series, they had some weird, secret society name) did some weird ritual to place their immortality in the world, or something like that. Except for one guy who kept his immortality and became the supreme dictator of the entire planet.

The main character was named Colin McCleod. Ramirez was there, as his teacher. There was also his little sister, a small herd of things that looked like Chacobos, and some weird, six legged/armed fuzzy creature that was apparently his sister's best friend.

And Colin went around the world, hunted by the immortal overlord, trying to convince all the other immortals to give up the last of their power so that HE could kill immortal overlord guy.

One other thing: has anyone ever noticed how so few people understand that the show/movies were called "Highlander" because Duncan and Connor were FROM the Highlands of Scotland? I once came across a comic book with an immortal swordsman who was called, and I kid you not, the "Highlander from Papa New Guynia" (or however you pronounce that country's name).

Jason:

I remember that show well, much to my regret. Since the names are the same on the characters, I'd wondered if maybe the plots are similar too, but who knows?

And, yes, Scotsman the animated series was da bomb! I think I still have that on tape somewhere...

Ben:

There are no highlands in Papua New Guinea?

I am the Wicked, Ugly, Evil BanshEEEEeeee!

Bard:

Not sure, Ben, but it wasn't written in that manner. It was written as a Highlander refernece. Which was odd.

Bekah:

Just an FYI: I believe there is a mountain range that runs straight down the middle of Papua New Guinea.

Ben:

Wait... technically, that would mean than anyone born on a mountain would be a "highlander." That would take a long time to get down to Only One. Also lots of Sherpas with broadswords. Maybe it did make more sense in Highlander 2, when they were space aliens or something.

Jason:

I'd like to see a revisionist Highlander from the point of view of an often-maligned warrior in skull armor or leather who hails from the steppes of Russia and tosses children into pits to fight against dogs for meat.

It would, of course, be called "The Kurgan".

Clearly, not immortals in the fight for the prize were highlanders.
